– Richard Mullin.
JANUARY
January in Tanzania falls within the rainy season, offering travelers the advantage of better rates and lush, green landscapes. However, the occasional shower and longer grasses can make game viewing slightly more challenging. Daytime temperatures can reach highs of around 29°C, making it one of the warmest months of the year. The Southern Serengeti and Ndutu Region are prime destinations in January, as the herds congregate on the lush plains to graze and calve, creating a spectacular wildlife viewing experience. Additionally, this month is excellent for birdwatching, with numerous migratory bird species arriving in the parks. Despite the rain, January is also a great time for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, as the weather on the mountain remains relatively stable, providing favorable conditions for a successful ascent.

The best time to climb Kilimanjaro is during the dry seasons, which are typically from January to early March and from June to October. These months offer the clearest skies, great visibility, and minimal rainfall, providing ideal conditions for trekking. January and February, in particular, are considered high season with fewer crowds compared to June to September, making it a balanced choice for hikers seeking both favourable weather and solitude.
Avoid climbing during April, May, and November as these months coincide with the long and short rainy seasons. During these periods, the trails can become muddy and slippery, visibility may be poor due to cloud cover, and the overall hiking experience may be more challenging. However, if you prefer quieter trails and are prepared for potential wet weather, late March and late May can occasionally offer drier conditions.
For those concerned about crowding, choosing less popular routes like the Northern Circuits, Rongai, or Lemosho can provide a more tranquil experience even during the busier months. Regardless of when you choose to climb, it's essential to be equipped with appropriate wet-weather gear and to prioritise safety amidst changing mountain conditions.
